Zagreb sampling

Tom Higham and Cara Kubiak visited the Croatian Academy of Sciences in May to take samples for a collagen peptide sequencing project (ZooMS) on material from the Vindija site. The aim is to identify bone fragments from some of the key levels of the site in order to undertake a stable isotope project. Cara is an MSc student working in the PalaeoChron project in 2015-16.

We worked with our colleagues Jadranka Mauch Lenardić, Sinisa Radovic and Ivor Karavanić.

In addition, we took some additional samples for AMS dating from some of the bone points at the site, in the G1 level. Prior to destructive sampling we took tiny %nitrogen samples, to check collagen preservation was sufficiently high for AMS dating. Using our keyhole sampling technique (see picture), we were able to take good sized samples without leaving large damage holes in the process.
